Usage and Precautions of Insulating Tape

Ⅰ. What is the insulating tape?

Insulating tape is a special tape with the function of isolating power and preventing leakage. Such tape is generally composed of two parts: base tape and adhesive layer. Among them, the base tape is generally made of cotton cloth, synthetic fiber fabric, plastic film, and other materials, all of which have insulating properties and will not conduct electricity; while the adhesive layer of the insulating tape is generally made of rubber and tackifying resin, and some compounding agents will be added to improve the adhesion of the adhesive layer. The color of insulating tape is usually black, red, white, yellow, green, and blue, having a rich variety of colors.

Ⅱ. The applications of insulating tape

1. Prevent construction workers from getting electric shock. Insulating tape is commonly seen in electrical work because electrical work often needs to come into contact with energized wires. In order to ensure that construction workers will not be electrocuted during construction, the insulating tape such as insulated ring is indispensable.

2. Protect the circuit. Insulating tape is generally wrapped around circuit joints and other needed places to protect the circuit. The joint part of the circuit is the most vulnerable place in the whole circuit. By using insulating tape, it can keep the joint part of the circuit from being exposed and thus reduce the probability of the joint part being exposed to wind and rain.

3. Fire retardancy. The insulating tape has the properties of fire prevention and flame resistance, and it is not easy to become unglued and dislocated. When the insulating tape is wrapped around the joint which is heated, it will not melt. Its anti-leakage capability is first-class. However, the use of insulating tape has limitations. The insulating tape can only be used in electrical work with a voltage below 380V. If the voltage exceeds this limit, the insulating effect of the insulating tape will be greatly reduced.

Ⅲ. Precautions for using the insulating tape

What should people pay attention to when using insulating tape? A few things to note:

1. When using insulating tape on the connector part of the power cord, we need to use the right connection method. Common insulating tape joint winding methods include cross connection, inline connection, T-connection, etc. The insulating tape at the joint should be wrapped firmly without burrs.

2. In order to prolong the lifespan of the insulating tape and slow down the damage of the tape, people would wrap two layers of electrical wire insulation tape on the insulating tape after winding it. In this way, the possibility of external damage to the insulating tape will be reduced, so the service life will be longer.

3. The insulating tape is thicker than ordinary tape, so it is not so convenient to operate. In order to wrap the wires well, people should move slowly when wrapping the insulating tape, and the wrapping amplitude should be well controlled and should not be too dense, otherwise it will not be wrapped well.
